Has anyone else tried this?
Meet my new bff, Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk. I’m pretty picky about non-dairy milks. First, they can’t be astronomically expensive. Also, flavor and consistency are very important. Rice milk is too sweet; Silk soymilk, to me, is like drinking a milkshake - WAY too rich, thick and sweet. Coconut milk is good, but there’s no calorie bonus like there is with almond milk. I...

Who's got two thumbs and got to run outside today?
THIS GIRL. Oohhhhhh yeah. Four miles with Mingus. It was overcast but I didn’t even care. I came the closest to a spinout so far this season though - a whole block of houses who don’t shovel their sidewalks, and were thus covered in glare ice! They should know I want to run on their sidewalks in January - the nerve ; ) We persevered. We conquered. Almost ran out of daylight but...

That would certainly be an emphatic statement from Mingus - he hasn’t done that in years! I’ve tried to acclimate him to running on the treadmill but it freaks him out. Then again, I’m sure he appreciates...

Guys! It's going to be like 40* today and sunny!
I’m at work early today so that i can leave early and go running! It’ll be like 32* with the windchill but I DON’T CARE. FOUR MILES!!! SO EXCITED. Also, Mingus is bouncing off the walls, so he’s coming with too. (He looked SO REJECTED when I had my running clothes on and started running on the downstairs treadmill last night. Seriously, he sniffed the treadmill, looked at...

Ever notice sometimes the most basic dinner...
…is the most satisfying?  Tonight’s dinner: Baked sweet potato Pan-friend Gardein “chicken” piccata Roasted green beans (rescued from a certain death in the fridge) Mashed cauliflower with scallions (also rescued from certain death) Many, many noms. Bonnie does indeed have early stages of Addison’s - because she’s young the vet wants to wait to put her on medication and monitor her closely. And Mingus is recovering just fine. He probably ate some goofy thing - that’s what...

Long run Saturday
11 miles 1:45:49  No lie, this run was really tough. I was struggling. I was lucky to have some great runners with me, though. Some interesting learning experiences: I dressed for the windchill (9ish*) but we never really had to deal with winds, so it was really closer to the actually temperature (19*), and the ten degrees proved to be a bit much.  Nutrition/hydration: In the cold weather, the...

Well, the scale is down a bit today. FINALLY.  Not breathing a sigh of relief yet though. Let’s see if the trend continues… (BTW my scale has a really, really annoying habit of weighing in a lower weight for a couple of minutes, several times, then I walk away, test the shower water with my hand, get back on the scale (just because I’m curious), and tah-dah!! increase of...

Today's moment of duh
Talking it over with T, I realized that I’m running my usual mileage… and I’m eating about the same calories…  …but it’s winter. I’m not walking the dog as much, mostly because it’s frigging dark out at some ridiculously early hour of the night/late hour of the morning. (Have I mentioned that I hate standard time? I hate the shift of an hour but I...

Three miles, done. I wasn’t going to do it. Then I went through my dash, saw all the awesome people doing their runs, and thought, what the hell, if everyone else can suck it up, so can I. Thanks, @brooksy, @kalsjourney, @navadoeslife and yall for setting a good example. Fitblrdom rocks. But I need some scenic running, soon. For reals. ETA: Special shout out to @flaquitalaurita. 6 miles on the books
I think today’s run was supposed to be a tempo run, but the thought of just running for 50 minutes on the TM straight makes me want to crawl into fetal position and cry. So, I decided to rock it track-style. 1 mile warmup 1x800 meters/0.5 mile repeats at marathon pace, half marathon pace, 10k pace, 5k pace, half marathon pace, marathon pace, with recovery in between each; 1 mile cool...

navadoeslife replied to your post: WIW: +1.2 pounds! My doc has always told me that anything you train for, especially half marathons and marathons, usually require maintaining weight or gaining some because of how much you need to be fueling your body. WIW: +1.2 pounds!
Today’s weigh-in: +1.2 lbs (from Jan. 4 official weigh-in) Current BMI: 24.68 (Change: +0.2) Change from SW: -41.8 Change from HW: -47.3 lbs  I’ll admit it - I’m stumped. It feels that I’ve been eating healthier than in December. I have been running more and doing more food logging over the past two weeks since my last weigh-in. Yet I’m up four pounds from my low weight...

On hunger
I spend a lot of time trying (more and less successfully) to manage hunger. And from what I’ve read and experienced so far, satisfying hunger seems to be more than just the calories-in part of the metabolic equation. In practice, it seems more a delicate balance between physical bulk in the stomach (hence the emphasis on foods high in water content and fiber), chemistry (calories and the...

Well, time for this weekend to end...
Yeah, I just ate an entire 9x9 pan of rice crispy treats for dinner. Stressed out and exhausted with dog health drama (Mingus threw up his breakfast about 30 minutes before he was about to get his dinner. How that works I have no idea. Here’s to hoping it doesn’t require another $200 of lab diagnostics.) Bonnie seems to be much better - she’s about 75% her old self. Not nearly...

Thanks for all the kind words about Bonnie, yall. She’s at the vet today and getting the blood test done to confirm Addison’s. The web research I was doing said that it wasn’t uncommon for the IV fluid treatment to result in a “miraculous” recovery because it brings the potassium concentrations down, but while she is definitely improved from yesterday, she is very...

We have a test scheduled on Monday to confirm, but our vet is relatively certain that Bonnie has Addison’s, which affects the adrenal gland’s ability to regulate things like electrolytes. After flushing her system with IV fluids to bring down her potassium level, she’s home, and completely exhausted. Not at all reassuring.  I’d give pretty much anything to see her be her...

OK… Bonnie is at the vet’s undergoing blood work. Usually they’re able to administer IV fluids to rehydrate and give her a shot of anti-emetics, bland food, and she’s good to go. If she’s not better by tomorrow morning, we’ll be doing some imaging to check for obstructions in her digestive system. Starting to get very, very worried…

Gorgeous 9 mile run on the books!
I was nervous about running outside this morning in the cold, but all in all - I’m very happy to say it went well. Got together with a bunch of TNT alumni this morning. Great day! It was a GORGEOUS morning - the sun was out (that makes it colder, I know, but it is much better than running in overcast conditions), and the snow sparkled over the river. And you can’t argue with getting a...

9 miles ahead. Thank goodness it’s with a group. I think my jacket and headgear will be fine, but I’m a little worried about my feet and a lot worried about my gloves… well, this will be a new cold-weather PR for me! (Note: we haven’t had our customary -30* windchill yet this winter *knock on wood* so I shouldn’t be complaining…)

Focusing on what I can do
It’s no secret that I’m a tad frustrated with my weight loss right now. I’m officially almost four pounds up from my low weight and four pounds away from my goal weight, and I’m three weeks out from the holidays and into marathon training.  To say that I am grumpy about all of this is a massive understatement. But, though I’m damn near ready to throw in the towel...

First, an apology - I feel that my posts have been very roller-coastery the last few months. I’m either on top of the world or digging my way out of a ditch (so many “back in the saddle” posts. Winter running jacket opinions?
So, I’m looking for a good winter running jacket at REI. It needs to be  - Windproof - Waterproof - Breathable (no soaked-inside-the-jacket thing going on.)  I hear eVent and Goretex are the only fabrics that really do this - e.g. no repeat of last weekend where the inside of my Columbia jacket shell was soaked, even with the pit zips completely open. Apparently other jackets only earn the...

9-ish in the books. 1:20:39. Ran pretty much straight through, and the pace showed - it was probably good to take it easy for a long slow distance, but I really slow down without the walk breaks! 12* when I started, -3* windchill. But used a jacket shell (way too big), running jacket and long-sleeved tech shirt, and heavy running pants (also way too big and no drawstring - talk about living...

DailyMile 2010 vs 2011
Well, this is interesting. In 2011… - I lost over 40 pounds - I took 62 minutes off my past marathon PR, same course. (I’m pretty sure you only get that kind of improvement once in your life.) - Improved my half marathon PR by 41 minutes (same race but different course) - Ran my first sub 22min 5k (PR’d by almost over 7 minutes)  Apparently I basically doubled my mileage this...
