Turmeric "milk"
I heard a story on MPR awhile ago about a study that found that spices with a high-fat meal reduced blood triglyceride level increases by a third, as well as insulin response decreasing by 20%.
Of course, these studies come and go, and who knows what future studies will bring. I was most taken by the description of turmeric milk in the story - a warm milk sweetened and then flavored with large...

Spoiling yourself silly: On effort, rewards, and...
I’ve known for awhile that I need to take another step towards healthy eating - namely, incorporating more whole grains, more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, and taking a close look at the amount of oil, sugars and sodium I consume. So when I heard about Engine 2, I thought this might be a good way to accomplish that goal.
But what really sold me was when I read Rip Esselstyn’s...

Running cadence
Cadence measures the number of times your foot strikes the ground - or, the number of steps you take - per minute. Ever since I read about using “Santeria” by Sublime (not at all revealing my age) to measure about 182 beats per minute cadence from Kate, I’ve been using it, and I think I’ve improved my running efficiency greatly as a result.
Interestingly, my PT suggested...

So, if this technology works… can you imagine how insanely popular it would be to marathon runners, especially those that run with iPhone GPS apps and music?

Easter: Raw (clean) fruit pie
I made several items for our Easter dinner yesterday. The raw and clean fruit pie [recipe], from the Engine 2 book, was a huge hit. Seriously - it was as popular as the turtle brownies. Win! I think this is a great clean eating “crossover dish” that you could easily serve to people skeptical of “health food.”
My less-than-original attempt at decorating the pie:
A couple...

Thanks, Chris - I’m working on it!

I wish every injured runner had your attitude. Suck about the pain, but what can you do, y’know? Hope you heal up quickly!
How should I say this… this is a very intentional, chosen attitude (read: my emotions are...

Made it two miles.
And definitely pain. Worse when I run, but pain when I walk, pain just sitting. Not excrutiating but gets worse when I try to run.
Ah, well. We said we’d try to run. I’ve only been in therapy a week. This is been developing for something like 4-6 weeks. A bit unrealistic to expect it to heal in a week. Keep doing the PT. Keep icing. Keep up with the NSAIDs. Keep drinking water. Do...

Anyone have any ideas for.. The Gu website says...
How about Lara Bars? Clearly not a gel but they’re more squishy than a straight-up clif bar, and I think they’re just dried fruit/nuts. Their website says they’re kosher too. (Lara Bars with chocolate have kosher dairy certification because the chips, though nondairy, are manufactured on the same equipment as chips containing dairy, so the bars with chocolate probably some trace...

Fat Shaming
Apparently in Spain.
I’ve come across a couple of fat-shaming items over the past couple of weeks. This was just the latest.
My disparate thoughts/reactions:
- First, and foremost… I really believe that if shame was an effective means of getting people to lose weight, we would not be a nation with an obesity problem. I mean, even in this country, it’s not easy to be fat....
Ha - it was only a matter of time before this meme was used for politics : ) Also 100000000000% agree.

"Zombies, Run!" app 50% off until Sunday, Ap 8
Usually $8, but now until Sunday, it’s only $4. Whether the promotion was timed for Easter (resurrection much?) or coincidental, I couldn’t tell you. But you will save some coin.
I haven’t tried it (downloading it now) but I have a friend who says it’s pretty cool.
From the website, for the uninitiated:

Take the Challenge: 30 Days of Biking
Even though the folks who started it are based in Minneapolis, it’s grown to be a global event with thousands of registrants. Even though it’s already April 5, I’m joining. Who’s with me?
“30 DAYS OF BIKING” HAS ONE RULE …
Bike somewhere every day for 30 days—around the block, 20 miles to work, whatever suits you—then share your adventures online. We...

Ladies and gentleman...
…we are GO* for running!! Woohoo!!
*The fine print: So technically no more than four miles, at an easier effort and no more than twice before my next PT appointment on Monday. BUT STILL…!!!!!
@RunningwithGuts, @StrengthforSuze,...
The “reply” function doesn’t seem to be working on my browser for some reason, but… thank you.
You have no idea how much I needed that.
I ran in the pool last night for 37 minutes.
I dropped my guy off at work at 5am and got to my 7:30 PT appointment at 6:30 because that’s how car situation/traffic rolls.
One step at a time. That’s how this stuff gets done....

Heading that way as soon as the car gets home. Thanks for the kick in the pants - much needed!

Whine...
Guys, I really miss running.
I haven’t been on a run since my failed 18-mile run (quit after about 5 miles) that spurred the PT appointment. That was March 18. My marathon is a little more than six weeks out from today.
I’ve been in the pool a bit, but not enough. Also, I am going insane. Completely frigging insane. I have done one session of hill training this “season.”...

Homemade black beans...
…are seriously the best. THE BEST. People would eat way more beans if they tried them made from dried beans. The can is a fine convenience food, but it just can’t compare. They develop this pot liquor that’s just delicious. Swoon-worthy, even. Also, they’re WAY cheaper than the grocery store (because you’re paying for transporting the liquid the beans are packed in,...

Mango salsa & breakfast parfait
More gratuitous pictures of today’s food.
Breakfast - fresh strawberry breakfast parfait with layers of soy yogurt, grape nuts and shredded wheat. Bad lighting - it was much prettier, I promise.
And lunch was my black bean burger barbeque wrap, with the addition of mango salsa (pictured below.) Delicious.
Mango salsa: 3 ripe mangos, sliced and chopped, half a sweet onion, half a...

Veggie spiralizer Groupon deal - $30!
Decent price for a spiralizer (it’s $29 all in.) On Amazon, the same slicer is about $45 when you include shipping. And who doesn’t want more veggie pasta in their life?
(If you’re not ready to make the commitment with a specialized gadget, you can use a regular vegetable peeler to make “ribbon” pasta out of zucchini and summer squash. It’s a great way to enjoy...

runningwithguts replied to your post: 22 miles of biking today!
Oh, man! I am über-jealous of (1) the ease with which you’re transitioning to cycling and (2) that bike non-profit!
I know. Before I get too excited, though, I have to remember that this was a VERY leisurely ride (we’re talking over the span of like five hours with a cafe stop, museum stop and co-op stop in between.) So -...

Lunch
Is anybody interested in seeing these…?
I’ve been on a wrap kick ever since starting the Engine 2 28-day challenge. I generally buy the sprouted tortillas made by French Meadow bakery (support local businesses!) but the Ezekial sprouted grain wraps are apparently pretty good too.
Today, it’s a black bean burger/barbeque theme:
- crumbled bean burger patty, recipe...

22 miles of biking today!
The BEST day today. Went with my friend celebrating her birthday and her significant other to breakfast, art museum and back home.
Got back on my bike for the first time since August. August! And before that it had been years since I’d been on it. I am loving it, people. You will see more biking posts on here soon for my cross-training.
I have to say, too - I was really worried about...
