My doc has always told me that anything you train for, especially half marathons and marathons, usually require maintaining weight or gaining some because of how much you need to be fueling your body.
Yeah, I thought that too until I actually started tracking calories last year and lost a lot on my marathon training - and my performance and ability to recovery didn’t seem indicative of under-fueling.
I think some people - very few - gain weight because they put on muscle during marathon/HM training.
But I think the vast majority put on pounds because of the increased hunger and “I ran today, I can eat that” mentality results in people eating more calories than they’re burning. In my experience (admittedly could be way off), most marathon runners, especially middle and back of the pack runners, are conscious of what they eat but are not consistently calorie counting/logging calories.
ETA: I should say that I appreciate the kind words. Wouldn’t it be awesome if I was gaining because of marathon training? Alas.
