13 miles

No lie - it was tough. The route was more hilly than I’m accustomed to, which is good - hills make you stronger - but I went out too fast and didn’t do enough walk breaks at the beginning. The last four miles were hell.

But, I had excellent company (my colleague’s husband is a crazy marathon runner, he’s done over 100, and regularly commuted - commuted! - by running 13 miles one way to work). We ran through Loring Park, downtown Minneapolis, on the River Road by the University of Minnesota, and ran by the river. We were treated to some gorgeous scenery. It was like we were running in a winter painting, complete with big fat snowflakes lazily drifting to the ground. Incredible.

(These are color photographs, believe it or not, even though they look sepia-toned.)

I’m still working very hard to figure out what to wear (23*, ran with heavy pants, technical shirt, balaclava, tech jacket, windproof vest, headband, light gloves, which were fine to begin with and I was completely soaked by the end.) But I will say what I’ve appreciated so far about winter running is that I have an excuse to go outside and enjoy winter in a whole new way. This winter I’ve gotten about a hundred times more fresh air and sunshine than previous winters, and it’s fantastic. Plus, even though I wasn’t able to take Mingus this weekend, I know the winter running overall takes off the edge of all that extra time spent inside.

Even if this run wasn’t quite what I wanted for my training, it was certainly what I wanted for my soul. Beautiful.
